Caustic soda — sodium hydroxide, NaOH — is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals in the UAE. Water treatment plants, oilfield service companies, detergent and soap makers, textile mills and food processors all depend on it. Because it is strong, corrosive and sold in several physical forms, buying it well is about more than price per tonne. This guide covers the forms on the market, the main uses, how to handle it safely and what to check before choosing a supplier.
Forms of caustic soda
Caustic soda reaches the UAE market in three main forms:
- Flakes — the most common solid form, typically around 98–99% NaOH, packed in moisture-proof bags. Easy to store and dose by weight.
- Pearls (prills) — small free-flowing beads with the same chemistry as flakes, preferred where automatic dosing or fast dissolving matters.
- Liquid (lye) — a water solution, usually around 48–50% NaOH, delivered in IBCs or road tankers. Convenient for plants with tanks and metering pumps, but more expensive to transport per tonne of active NaOH.
The right form depends on how you dose, how much storage you have and how far the product travels. Solids are cheaper to ship; liquid saves labour and dissolving time on site.
Where caustic soda is used
- Water treatment — raising and controlling pH, softening hard water and helping heavy metals such as lead and copper precipitate so they can be filtered out.
- Oil and gas — pH and alkalinity control in water-based drilling fluids, and a range of cleaning and neutralising duties on site.
- Soap, detergents and biodiesel — the classic saponification reagent, and a catalyst for biodiesel transesterification.
- Industrial cleaning — dissolving grease, oils, fats and protein deposits from tanks and process equipment.
- Textiles, pulp and paper, metal processing and glass — where alkalinity, cleaning or neutralisation is part of the process.
- Food processing — only food-grade material, for example in peeling fruit and vegetables or cocoa processing.
Safe handling and storage
Sodium hydroxide is strongly alkaline and corrosive to skin and eyes. Dissolving it in water releases a lot of heat. Good practice includes:
- Gloves, goggles or a face shield, and protective clothing whenever handling or dissolving it.
- Always add caustic to water slowly — never water to caustic.
- Storing bags off the floor in a dry, covered area, sealed against air and moisture, which make the solid cake.
- Keeping it away from acids and from aluminium, zinc and tin, which it attacks.
- Keeping the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) on site and training staff on first aid for splashes.
For transport it is classed as a corrosive dangerous good (Class 8: UN1823 for the solid, UN1824 for solutions), so drivers and warehouses need to follow the relevant rules.
How to choose a caustic soda supplier in the UAE
1. Certificate of Analysis for every batch — NaOH content, and impurities such as sodium carbonate, chloride and iron, which matter for food, water and oilfield uses.
2. The right grade for the job — technical grade for cleaning and industrial use, food grade only where the product touches food.
3. Packaging that survives the climate — moisture-proof bags or sealed drums for solids; proper IBCs or tankers for liquid.
4. Stock close to your operation — local stock in the UAE avoids long lead times and lets you order to your consumption instead of holding large inventories.
5. Documentation and compliance — SDS, correct dangerous-goods labelling and invoices that match what was delivered.
6. One supplier for related chemicals — if you also buy calcium chloride, potassium chloride, barite or industrial salt, one reliable supplier simplifies purchasing and logistics.
