Barite (barium sulphate, BaSO4) is the workhorse weighting agent of the drilling industry. Ground to specification and added to water- or oil-based mud, it raises fluid density so the hydrostatic column controls formation pressure. For an operation in the Gulf, the two questions that matter are simple: does the barite meet specification, and can the supplier deliver consistently at the volumes a drilling campaign consumes?
What API 13A actually requires
The American Petroleum Institute's Specification 13A defines drilling-grade barite. The headline parameters are:
- Density: minimum specific gravity of 4.10 for standard grade, with premium material supplied at SG 4.15 or 4.20
- Water-soluble alkaline earth metals (as calcium): maximum 250 mg/kg
- Particle size: no more than 3.0% retained on a 75-micron sieve, and no more than 30% finer than 6 microns
- Residue greater than 75 microns limited to protect pumps and downhole tools
A certificate of analysis against these parameters should accompany every shipment. If a supplier cannot produce batch-level test results, the material has no place in a well.
SG 4.15 vs 4.20 — which grade to specify
Higher-SG barite achieves target mud weight with less product, which matters on deep or high-pressure wells where solids loading affects rheology. For routine sections, SG 4.15 is usually the economical choice; SG 4.20 earns its premium where mud weight requirements are at the top of the range or where low solids content is critical. Blue Line Industries supplies both grades, ground and bagged in the UAE.
Why local processing matters in the GCC
Importing finished barite exposes a drilling campaign to shipping schedules and port congestion. Processing ore in the UAE changes the equation:
- Ore arrives in bulk vessels and is stored at scale, so grinding runs against local demand rather than a distant mill's schedule
- Quality is verified twice — on the ore at receipt and on the ground product before dispatch
- Delivery to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the wider Gulf is measured in truck-days, not vessel-weeks
Our plant in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi grinds barite to API 13A specification, with in-house laboratory testing on every batch and certificates of analysis issued against passed tests only.
Packaging and logistics
Drilling-grade barite moves in 1–1.5 tonne FIBC jumbo bags, 25/50 kg small bags on pallets, or in bulk. Because Blue Line also manufactures FIBC bags in the UAE, packaging specification — including liner, loop and print requirements — is handled under the same roof.
